This is your chance to bring enjoyment to hundreds of listeners around the world who listen to BBC drama every week.

Radio Acting involves the ability to create believable characters using your imagination and intelligence together with the ability to bond with fellow actors you may have only just met. Radio lives in the “suspended” minds of the listeners. Each listener will create a different picture in their mind inspired by your performance and the writer’s words. It’s incredibly rewarding for you as an actor. But to stand a chance of “Breaking In” you will need a “Radio Drama Showreel”. The guidelines have been made clear by the RDC (Radio Drama Company) and you must record a Demo that not only shows your vocal range, age, style and versatility but more importantly your acting ability.

Time to ACT

You should consider recording about 7 pieces, each lasting approximately one and a half minutes, making sure they’re as contrasting as possible and cover your whole vocal range. It is also a good idea to try where possible, to include some of the following: Classic Drama, Contemporary Prose, Comedy, Native Accent or any Dialects you are comfortable with, Audio Book, Song. You will also need to give each of your reads a short introduction including the name of the play and the role you are playing.

Top Tips
It’s definitely worthwhile enclosing with your Drama CD a personal accompanying letter and CV. This is especially useful if you can highlight any previous radio, theatre, film or TV credits you may have clocked up. Timing is also important. If you’re about to appear on stage, in a Film or on TV, it’s possible for the RDC to “flag” that fact and encourage one of their producers to watch your performance firsthand.
