General Questions

I’ve always been interested in Voiceovers. How do I get started?

There are many ways to get started in voice over but the last 30 years discovering, training & mentoring new emerging voices has taught us that no classroom-based workshop, VO book or online voice training course can give you what you really need to be able to find out if you have the vocal skills needed to get going in today’s ever changing market place. Voice Over is a “doing thing” and the only way to learn how to get started is to get behind the mic and take direction from established working voice producers.

Your first step should be our 1 Day Intro Workshop .

No previous voice over or acting experience is needed to attend and you’ll learn everything you need to know about how to get started. This fun and interactive workshop is perfect for beginners of all ages. Our honest and professional feedback will help you make that all-important decision about moving forward. Check out our clients’ testimonials and see what others attendees have said.

We believe that starting at the beginning, learning the basic skill set needed to succeed and building on those skills and actually getting behind the mic is the only true way to give you the best possible start without wasting your time and money finding out the hard way.

When are your next Intro to Voice Over Workshop Dates?

We hold our Into Workshop every Friday and occasionally at weekends at our Studios in Soho. All information and dates can be found here. It really is a great way to get going in voice over.

Intro Workshop Dates

I don’t want a workshop. Do you offer 1-2-1 training?

Absolutely. Although we hold various workshops & classes here at The Showreel, sometimes a little personal time is called for. In our experience a 1-2-1 voiceover coaching session with an experienced industry professional can be the best way to develop your voice(s) and fine tune your skills to give you that competitive edge and get you closer to recording that “killer” voice Demo.

We also know that everyone is different and some of you may need more personal one-on-one time than others. That’s why we make sure you receive the right help from the right coach who specialises in your particular voiceover genre and will meet your particular needs and personality.

Oops, I haven’t left a Voice Clip is it too late?

It’s never too late to leave your voice clip! Just call the studio hotline and leave a brief 30 second voicemail before your chosen workshop or demo recording session. This really is important as it helps us all at Showreel HQ to prepare before we meet you.

Simply call the studio voicemail: 020 7043 8660. Best times are weekends and after 7pm at night. (otherwise we may answer)

Just leave us a voicemail along the lines of:

Hi Guys, my name is (Your Name) and I’m really looking forward to meeting you at the studios on (Your Date). The reason I’m leaving this voicemail is to give you an idea of my vocal age, range and style which I know will help you prepare for my session”.

Help! I need to cancel my workshop or recording session

We are human here at Showreel HQ, but it is important that you know how we run our studios.

Cancellations: – a minimum of 7 days notice must be given if you intend to cancel your booking or you will unfortunately forfeit your session payment.

Rescheduling: – a minimum of 7 days notice must be given if you wish to reschedule your booking, otherwise unfortunately we will have to charge you an admin re-booking fee of £50 for any Workshop & £25 for any 121 session.  Demo sessions cannot be rescheduled less than 7 days from your demo date. Payment must be made within 7 days of any rescheduling in order for your new appointment to go in the diary. Otherwise, it will be deemed that you have cancelled. A rescheduling request cannot be open ended. A new date must be provided otherwise it will be deemed as a cancellation.

Showreel Cancellations: – In the rare event that we have to cancel your session, we will let you know as soon as possible. In such an event, your payment will be reimbursed in full or put towards another date. We are unable to reimburse any other costs you may have incurred, such as travel and accommodation.

Demos & Updates

What is a Demo Reel and why do I need one?

Your “Demo Reel” is a professionally recorded and produced representation of your voice that features you doing your best voice work. It is your voice over business card and what you need to send to Agents, upload to P2P online-casting sites or to your own website.  Think of it as a voice portfolio. Just like an Actor needs a Headshot – You need a Voice Demo to get work in the Industry.

It is your way of demonstrating to Voice Agents and potential Clients, your vocal age, style, range and ability. It should only contain your best and most recent work, starting with what you believe to be your most natural and most usable voice. Your “Money Voice”. The type of voice that could be used on a regular basis by a variety of different clients. It should then take the listener on a “roller coaster” ride to keep them entertained before ending once again on your “Natural” voice to remind them what you sound like.

And the good news is that over the last 30yrs we have produced over 8,000 Demos. So you are in safe hands.

How do I find scripts for my chosen Demo?

There are many ways to find scripts for you particular Demo Package. Once you have confirmed your Demo recording session, you will be emailed the login details to our Members’ Area. Here you will find all you need to prepare for your recording session with us, including access to our script archive as well as other resources that will help you prepare.

Apart from training is there anything I will need to get started?

If you’re serious about getting work and an agent you’ll need a voiceover showreel. It’s your way of demonstrating to Voice Agents and potential Clients, your vocal age, style, range and ability.

We suggest our Agent Pack As the best choice if you wish to enter the “commercial” voiceover side of the Industry & wish to approach Voiceover Agents as this is what is expected. It’s all very easy to book this Demo Pack online.
