Learn everything you need to speak in a comfortable, confident and authentic ‘General American’ accent.

The demand for UK actors who can work in American accents has never been higher. Not just in big-budget TV & Film, and Theatre – but in every facet of our business: adverts, audiobooks, corporate VO, and more. Having an authentic-sounding ‘General American’ can open doors for your career, but it can also feel like a daunting task.

If you’ve been up for an American role and panicked at the thought of the accent, or left an audition feeling like you didn’t quite nail it, narrated an audiobook with lots of different American voices, or even had it sprung on you last minute in the audition room – this is the workshop for you. In a 6-person small group workshop, professional Dialect Coach Carter Bellaimey will help learn to make your ‘GenAm’ fluent, flexible, and comfortable. Gain the practical skills needed to sound authentically American, as well as the best ways to stay connected to your acting so that you’re not just putting on a voice. Make it belong to you.

  • What is General American and who speaks it?
  • The top ten sounds to deliver an amazing GenAm accent
  • Learn the core Rhythm, Emphasis, and Cultural engagement techniques
  • How to continue improving your accent after the workshop
  • Record some copy before and after to hear your progress
  • How to prepare for any job in ‘GenAm’
Carter Bellaimey is a US-native Dialect Coach based in London. He has BFA in Acting and an MA in Sociocultural Linguistics.

Some current clients include: Jodie Whitaker (Doctor Who, Broadchurch), Matthew Macfadyen (Succession HBO, The Current War), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), and Alex Hassell (Cowboy Beebop Netflix, Suburbicon). Some recent credits include: Anna Bella Eema (The Arcola) and Fireheart (upcoming animated feature starring Kenneth Branagh and Olivia Cooke).

Carter’s acting background gives him a unique ability to teach accents from both sides. His work is rooted in his research background from his MA in Sociocultural Linguistics, as well as his BFA in Acting during which he trained in standard and regional UK dialects at Shakespeare’s Globe. He specialises in coaching UK actors in American dialects (‘General American’, Southern US [Rhotic/Non-Rhotic], New York, Boston, The Midwest, and more).

  • A full and detailed breakdown of the accent – the mechanics of GenAm
  • Direct coaching and direction on your delivery style
  • Individual instruction on how really to improve your accent
  • Short recording to show how you’ve improved during the day
  • A greater understanding of the sounds, context, and culture surrounding the accent – and why this is critical
  • Skills to help you tackle any American job in the future with confidence.
We now offer the means to spread the cost of your workshop across 3 months. You will be charged 3 x £60 for a total of £180. The additional £5 is to cover additional transaction fees we incur.

I did my drama voice reel with Mike. Mike had obviously thought about each piece before I’d arrived and he was already prepared with some suggestions for musical settings and sound effects, which I had not been expecting. Mike has a strong musical instinct for what is going to work and a massive library at his fingertips. I appreciated how he listened and how he engaged with what I was trying to achieve. It felt like a collaboration and he was both patient and a perfectionist. While I am really looking forward to the final edit, I was delighted with the experience, and I look forward to returning for my next project.
